Types of Solar installations include:

Grid-tie solar system

A solar system that connects the solar panel installation with the main electricity grid is known as a grid-tie solar system and, if legislation allows, you will be able to feed excess energy back into the grid through a special meter, and when legislation allows you will be financially rewarded.

Off-grid solar system

An off-grid solar system is generally installed for remote properties where the cost of connecting to the main grid is prohibitive or not financially viable. The solar system charges a battery bank which in turn is used to power all your appliances and lights etc. A generator may be used as a backup to the battery system for added security, if so required..

Hybrid solar system

A hybrid solar system combines the best of both worlds: the convenience of a grid connected system — including the ability to earn Feed-In tariff credits (legislation applicable) — with the extra peace of mind of a battery backup. This means that even during a power blackout, you still have electricity.

Backup system

A backup system allows you to enjoy a continuous power supply when the grid fails. When the grid power is off, energy is supplied to your home from a battery and inverter system, enabling you to continue with your daily routine.

COC

What is a Certificate of Compliance (COC)?

A Certificate of Compliance is a document that ensures the electrical work on your property complies with the South African National Standards as stipulated in the Electrical Installations Occupational Health and Safety Act.

When selling a property, the owner has the responsibility of supplying a valid Certificate of Compliance as well as an electrical fence certificate of compliance in cases where there are electric fences before any property can be transferred. 

Any house with electrical items will be required to have a Certificate of Compliance (CoC), these items will include the DB board, lights, swimming pools, geysers, wiring and even plugs. 

All qualified electrical contractors are expected to be registered with the Department of Labour (D.O.L), before issuing a CoC electrical certificate, this can be validated by the E.C.A. (Electrical Contractors Association) or the Department of Labour.

Having a Certificate of Compliance (CoC) ensures that:

  • Your property has been earthed and bonded correctly by a qualified electrician.
  • Your property’s electrical work will be in line with the necessary regulations.
  • All electrical circuits are operating correctly and efficiently.
  • Your property is safe against any potential shocks or fires.

    • A CoC certificate does not stay valid forever.

    Any addition or alteration made to the electrical components of a property which already has a CoC will need a supplementary CoC certificate for the addition or alteration, always keep both COC’s together.

    Gordon Steyn

    I registered GHS Projects (PTY) Ltd in 2020 amidst the loadshedding crises.

    Prior to starting GHS Projects, I worked as a manager and site foreman at an electrical installations company. During my employment at the electrical company, I helped the company manage site installations, attended to electrical installations, procurement and worked on specialised electrical installations.

    I obtained my Wireman’s license in 2016 and furthered myself with certification in solar installations. I currently live in Pretoria with my wife and children. When I’m not keeping busy with installations or designs you can find me bank angling and enjoying time with my family.

    "What started out as a minor electrical certificate quickly manifested in to a partnership and ultimately a friendship. After the purchase of our new property there were some issues with the electrical system that was signed off by another company, after getting Gordon’s nr from a friend the path to friendship started. Gordon came out and give me quote that was not even competitive to the other quotes that was received…but was by far the cheaper for minor worked that had to be completed, to be up to date with the latest rules and regulations. He added a new breaker in the DB board so that the existing A/C that was installed are up to code, he also added 3 new breakers, wiring etc. to the DB board and external plug points for 2 new A/C’s that had to be installed as well as jacuzzi. This was all done on a professional and extremely neat manor where you could hardly see where the paving was lifted or work was done. When load shedding started up again in 2021, I phoned Gordon to come and give me quote for a complete install if a “load shedding” PV solution. Once all the estate issues and clearances was sorted for PV panels (which Gordon did on for me as I did not have the time at that moment, and needed to have power to the house…and he did that with a smile). The install of the invertor and batteries was done extremely professional with all cables etc. running in conduits. Gordon even went out of his way when one of the batteries deiced to give issues on a Sunday evening and came out to collect the battery and had I fixed and re-installed within the same week.
